Lucifer's Mansion, Very Late Friday Night

Octavia hadn't said much on the walk over from the club. Hadn't felt like it, for whatever reason. And there was worth to be found in silence on a late-night walk through town, anyway.

But they were here now. Just inside the door, and Octavia sighed and brushed her hair back from her face, and and seemed to try and inhale some sociability into herself.

"Do you have fruit?"

The odds didn't seem great. It wasn't like he was actually here a whole lot, these days.

Octavia gave a soft huff. "That last thing doesn't sound like I have the patience."

"It's quite relaxing when you get going, really," said Lucifer, sipping his drink.

Octavia raised her eyebrows, just a little.

"Sounds like experience talking."

[my_own_advocate]

Lucifer shrugged. "I was very bored a few centuries ago."

[okteiviakom]

"So you built tiny boats?" Octavia murmured. "That's new."

[my_own_advocate]

"It was one thing of many I've tried," Lucifer defended himself. "But definitely in Duke's nautical wheelhouse."

[okteiviakom]

"No need to get defensive," Octavia replied, but there was a definite teasing tone to it. "Anyway, seems a little late for me to take that up, now."

"Maybe next year," Lucifer said. "You can stave off your madness for another birthday."

[okteiviakom]

"Mmm," Octavia hummed, as her head tilted in a way where she wasn't looking at him, again.

It was still weird for her to think about how she might actually see the next one, too.

"But really, I do think antiquing would be a good idea," Lucifer said, after a pause. "You're bound to find something unusual that clicks for you."

"I guess," Octavia muttered. "If it's going to be a... thing at all. An object."

[my_own_advocate]

"Are you thinking of giving him a gesture?" Lucifer asked, tilting his head. "That might work."

[okteiviakom]

"A gesture, or an experience, or something."

She'd stop sighing eventually, promise.

"Everyone in this town has too much junk as it is."

[my_own_advocate]

"If you want, I can always portal us to the Bahamas early and you can rummage around, maybe do up some ideas?" Lucifer offered.

"No, thanks." Octavia shook her head, a slow and small gesture. "This one has to be mine."

The Bahamas was his.

"All right," Lucifer said. He considered his glass. "Though at least now you know you don't need to keep shopping, I suppose."

"I'm still gonna go and look."

It wasn't like she had other obligations to worry about, anyway.

[my_own_advocate]

"Just don't turn it into a thing to be upset about," Lucifer said. "I'm fairly certain that's the last thing Duke wants."

"I won't."

Well.

The best she could actually guarantee was something where neither of them could tell.

Sigh, Octavia.

"Good," Lucifer said, and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

Octavia was quiet for a few breaths.

And wasn't really all that much louder even once she spoke again. "Do you even have a birthday?"

[my_own_advocate]

"Hm. No, not really," Lucifer said thoughtfully. "The disadvantage of being personally created by God at the beginning of the universe."

[okteiviakom]

"Hard to set a date for something like that," Octavia agreed, thoughtful but mild.

And keeping it to herself how she thought birthdays probably mattered even less if your expected lifespan was infinite.

"I try to make up for it by throwing lots of nonspecific parties instead," Lucifer said, smirking a little.

"Those are better, anyway."

Spoken like someone who didn't actually like parties in the first place.
