Lucifer's Mansion, Sunday Evening

"I don't think I've got this."

It had been a while since the last Sunday night date night.

It felt like it had been forever. And Octavia's memories of the last date night of any day of the week at the house weren't great.

None of that was what was getting to her right this second.

"It's just not doing what I want, Lucifer."

She was trying to pipe some sort of ganache onto a thing of dessert in a dainty little bowl, and no, it was not going smoothly at all. As far as issues went, it would have been almost blissfully mundane, had it not also been so very frustrating.

"Well, we can't exactly walk back to the Rouge every time we need an herb," Lucifer pointed out. "Or Turtle and Canary."

"Okay, but what was the point in all that 'if we didn't eat it something else would' stuff?" Octavia returned. "Because I was talking about the things you have in your fridge apparently just in case."

"I said someone else would or it might wither away somewhere," Lucifer said. He frowned. "It's not as if I've stuffed my entire fridge full of vegetables and whole pigs. I just... try to keep most herbs on hand. In case moments like this occur."

"That doesn't make it not wasteful," Octavia replied.

But she was already sounding more resigned about it again.

"Perhaps not," Lucifer said.

He took a bite. Let the flavor linger for a moment.

"But unlike you, I am fundamentally a wasteful being."

It shouldn't have felt disappointing: it wasn't like any of this was news.

Octavia swallowed it down. Did her best to, anyway. Gave one of her vague hums and then nodded towards the bowl. "Is it fine?"

"It's good," Lucifer said, still mulling that whole exchange over in the back of his head. "The lemon was a good touch."

The lemon basil would have been better, but he was wise enough not to bring that up.

"Good," Octavia replied. And yes, it was quiet and mild, and so was this: "You can have it."

Her dessert appetite seemed to have gone MIA.

Ah.

Whatever part of him had still been... inflated, deflated.

"I've disappointed you," Lucifer said.

"Not really."

A pretty lie with good intentions.

Octavia found herself trying to lean against his side again, arm sliding around his waist.

"I shouldn't expect you to... be on my side with this one." Maybe she was telling herself that more than him.

"I don't want you to be uncomfortable," Lucifer said, quieter. "I can... scale down the shopping for our date nights. And yours with Duke's."

"Okay," Octavia murmured as her head tipped against his shoulder. "I don't need there to be extra stuff." Didn't want it, no, but again: trying to make it pretty. "I'm fine with thinking something could use something and just... trying that next time."

"All right."

Lucifer's own arm worked its way around her shoulders.

It just made Octavia pull him even closer.

"I'm sorry."

That was quiet.

[my_own_advocate]

"Don't be sorry," Lucifer said. He pressed a kiss against her temple. "You are you and I am... me, and occasionally we have to compromise between the two."

"I don't know why it's getting to me right now."

Out of desperation to try and grab a grip on various things right now, but she hadn't quite gotten around to unpacking any of it in therapy just yet.

Lucifer gave half a shrug with the one side of his body not plastered against her. "Doesn't matter," he said. "It's easily fixed."

"I'm still sorry," Octavia muttered. "And I still love you."

Felt important to say.

"I love you too," Lucifer said softly. "Even when you don't let me pamper you obscenely."

Well, Octavia had had a good run not curling more against his body and trying to bury her face against his neck, but it was clearly over now. Since she was doing exactly that.

"Not this way, no," she agreed in a murmur.

Lucifer tilted his head up, to give her the space to do as much burying as she'd like. "Duly noted."

Octavia gave in completely, turning until she could get her other arm around him, too.

"I'll still let you do whatever feels natural in other ways."

[my_own_advocate]

And Lucifer pulled her in tight. "Thank you," he said. "Because I do like going overboard. I'm not sure I can contain myself in all aspects of our lives."

"You don't have to," Octavia promised him quietly. "Just don't overfill the fridge."

"No more overfilling the fridge," Lucifer said, nudging the bowl back onto the counter before he got his other hand involved in this hug, too.
