The Marina, Cat Island, Friday Afternoon

As most days this week (and the one before that, and the one before that...) Octavia had spent most of the early parts of her day working around the marina. There was always maintenance work to be done, things to fix, areas to tidy. She knew how to do most of the usual things by now, too, and had less of a need for the local workers to show her the ropes, whether literal or figurative. She could just be helpful. Just that, and not a burden or a hindrance.

It settled something in her. At least a little.

But by now, her tasks for the day were done. She'd cleaned all of the maintenance grime off of herself, and was now sitting near where the Fin & Tonic was docked. Watching the water, listening to whatever noise was coming from elsewhere in the marina.

Thinking about home.

"Good," Octavia murmured, as her hand settled onto his shoulder. "I know it had to be hard."

"It's hard," Lucifer agreed softly. "To feel like you're not allowed to be a whole person to someone you love."

"Yeah."

What more was there to say to that, except a single softly muttered word?

(Plenty, probably.)

Lucifer leaned in to kiss her cheek. "Anyway," he said, "I'm sorry for being depressing."

"I do it often enough," Octavia muttered.

He had nothing to be sorry for.

Lucifer let out a soft huff. "Wouldn't characterize it like that," he said. "But... yes. Let's move on to cheerier topics, shall we? Like how much you'll enjoy being home again."

"Mm," Octavia hummed, noncommittal for no other reason except that she'd had enough depressing thoughts of her own just now that disengaging from them was going to take a moment. "Weather was much cooler, back there."

"There wouldn't be much skinny-dipping, no," Lucifer agreed.

"Don't you have people building an entire pool?"

She'd considered dropping by the house on Wednesday, but... hadn't. Somehow hadn't really felt like her place.

So to speak.

"True..." Lucifer mused. "You know, they should be about done when we return..."

[okteiviakom]

"I thought that was the whole idea."

Well, part of the idea, anyway.

"Well, you never know for sure with contractors," Lucifer pointed out. "But they sent me some pictures the other day, progress looks good."

"So it's shaping up like you wanted?"

[my_own_advocate]

"I do think it'll be quite nice," Lucifer said, smiling. "What are you hoping for?"

[okteiviakom]

Octavia shrugged one shoulder. "I'm just looking forward to seeing what you ended up going for."

She'd have plenty of time to get attached to the whole project of it once it was finished.

"Well, I've tried to make it restful and inviting," Lucifer said. "I just... hope you won't hate it."

"I usually swim at public pools," Octavia had to point out.

And yes, shocking that she'd take a pragmatic approach.

"Well, yes," Lucifer said. "But this would be our home pool."

[okteiviakom]

Octavia shrugged again.

"Means I don't have to worry about people swimming too fast or too slow in my lane?"

[my_own_advocate]

"Well," Lucifer said, after a pause. "That's an awfully practical way to look at it."

[okteiviakom]

"That's me," Octavia offered. "Awfully practical."

[my_own_advocate]

"And I love you for it," Lucifer said wryly. "Still. It matters. To me."

[okteiviakom]

"I'm sure it'll be fine," Octavia told him.

It was the best she had.

"Promise you'll still love me if you think it's awful?" Lucifer said.

Half-joking.

It got kind of a wry look from Octavia.

"How fragile do you think my love is?"
