Lucifer's Mansion, Sunday Evening

There had not been a Sunday night date night at Lucifer's house in a long time. Octavia supposed they should've marked it as a special occasion somehow. But, in all honesty, with the summer they'd had, it was special enough just to meet Lucifer at the house in the first place.

She'd asked him to handle dinner however he chose. She was bringing dessert -- no, not like that.

... Okay, maybe like that, too. But actual dessert as well.

Which she had with her in a little paper bag as she made her way into the mansion.

... And she would find Lucifer already there. He had rejected all of his impulses to go big - Octavia didn't like waste.

So he'd gone for something simple. A melody of vegetables and mushrooms, cooked in a wok, coated in miso sauce - with some noodles and lightly cooked fish to round things off.

"Octavia?" he called. "I'm almost done!"

"So it's safe to enter the kitchen?" Octavia called back, as a joke.

As one might be able to tell from her poking her head in not long after.

Lucifer laughed. "Well, I wasn't planning to fling a hot pan at you either way, darling," he said. "But you can take a seat at the dinner table, if you prefer."

Octavia gave one of her soft huffs. "Well, maybe I'll do that, then." She paused for a beat. "I'd ask if you think you can get everything yourself, but..."

"It's all in the wokking, niron," Lucifer laughed.

And then performed an incredibly overdramatic flip of the pan's contents.

"Uh huh," Octavia said, not entirely as deadpan as she pretended it was.

And then she went to get herself situated at the dinner table - although not before setting her little dessert bag down on a convenient nearby surface, to wait.

Lucifer, for his part, took the wok from the stove and walked after her. "I do think you'll like this," he said. "Simple, but satisfying."

He was brandishing a serving spoon like a dramatic fool and punctuating the words with it, yes.

"I shouldn't say 'just like you', should I?" Octavia rasped, mostly because she could.

While she pulled out her own chair and took a seat.

"You should not, since I'm hardly simple," Lucifer pointed out.

He served her up a good helping of food.

Octavia lifted one shoulder in a faint half-shrug. "Sometimes you are," she said. "Most of the time, you're not."

And then, she nodded to her plate, because she also had to acknowledge the food.

"Mochof."

"You're welcome," Lucifer said.

If his smile was a little wider and more sincere than usual, well. There had been a lot of grief between last date night and this one. Much like with Duke, there was a...

A something, to doing this simple, domestic thing once more.

Octavia smiled back, smaller but about as sincere.

Then she nodded to the chair across from her. "Sit, niron."

"As you wish," Lucifer said.

Though not before scooping food onto his own plate. He set the pan down carefully, and then followed suit.

"I hope you like it."

"I usually do," Octavia told him, picking up her fork.

"And I am going to believe that is because of my skill at cooking," Lucifer said firmly, as he took his own fork and stuck it in a carrot.

Octavia loaded up her own fork, and gave him a wry little smirk.

"Well, what else would it be?"

And she stuck the fork in her mouth.

"Your low standards," said Lucifer, who continued to have trouble with the brain-to-mouth filter on these less-than-vital issues. "But that would be mad."

Octavia's eyebrows quirked, but he had to wait for her verbal reply until after after she'd swallowed.

Mostly, anyway.

"I don't have low standards for the food I like."

"No?" Lucifer said. Inquisitively.

"No," Octavia said. Firmly. Still kind of giving him a lookacross the table. "Why is that a surprise?"

Lucifer shrugged. "I've never known you to be a picky eater," he pointed out. "Pescatarianism aside."

The damn eyebrows just weren't coming down. Although to Octavia's credit, she mostly looked mildly baffled.

"Yeah, that's why I was stressing the liking," she said. "I'll eat a lot of things."

There was a long pause.

"Well, I've never seen you dislike anything I put--"

Long pause.

"This circles back to you liking my cooking, doesn't it?"

"Yeah," Octavia confirmed, with a slight further twitch of the eyebrows. "So maybe take the compliment for what it is? I like the food you make."

Her general low standards for what she'd put in her stomach had nothing to do with it.

"Right," Lucifer said. He cleared his throat. "Well. Thank you."

And took a quick bite before he could put his foot in his mouth again.
