Lucifer's Mansion, Very Late Friday Night

And then some texts with Duke.

And then Lucifer's house, and specifically Lucifer's bed, where Octavia was now catching her breath and brushing her hair out of her face with a slightly lazy and uncoordinated hand, flopped down on her back.

Lucifer slid his fingers over her cheek, then trailed them back down over her arm.

And found her hand eventually.

Octavia's fingers pushed between his about as soon as he had.

She sighed.

Lucifer gave her fingers a squeeze. "It's a bit of a miracle," he said, "How much of a mess you can make in your own head."

A pause.

"All those expectations."

Octavia pulled back enough that she could tilt her head up to see him.

Her unimpressed look was faint, though. Tired.

"I mean, I thought I'd find the Detective waiting for me as desperately as I'd been missing her," Lucifer mused.

And then the unimpressed just... faded away.

Her free hand pressed against his chest.

"I thought about it endlessly while I was in Hell," Lucifer said quietly. "How it would go."

"I tried not to think about it, after a while," Octavia muttered very quietly.

She couldn't fathom thousands of years of it.

"Well, my only other options were micro-managing masochistic humans, and occasionally checking in on humans whose masochistic fantasies had you or Duke or whoever in them," Lucifer muttered.

"... What?"

The question sounded small.

Yes, she was well aware he'd sent demons up to talk to them. She'd just never actually thought about anything that might've meant on the -- Hell side of things.

"You definitely did a number on that-- what was his name? Pike man," Lucifer said thoughtfully.

Octavia's face fell even further.

"You saw Pike?"

"It was rather unexpected," Lucifer said, "But time can be funny in Hell in more ways than one."

He glanced down at her. "Why the long face?"

Octavia pulled away a little further, so she could push herself up on one elbow. Her eyebrows were knitting together as she looked away, her eyes oddly helpless.

This was... several unexpected things at once.

Lucifer sighed. "Octavia..."

Octavia pushed further, until she was fully sitting up.

Pushed her hair out of her face, and drew in a deep breath.

Lucifer shifted so he was propped up on an elbow, as well. He looked at her, and wondered if reaching out for her would do any good. Or just make this worse.

Octavia was kind of hunched over, looking into the middle distance.

She should probably say something.

She didn't know what to say.

Lucifer sighed, and-- finally reached for her arm. That could be safe, no?

"I just wanted to see you," he said.

It was safe. At least Octavia didn't try to pull away from the touch.

Her voice was like gravel. "What did you see?"

That wasn't really what this was about.

"You murdering him repeatedly," Lucifer said, tilting his head. "He just couldn't work out how he didn't wind up the redeemed hero of that story, I believe."

Octavia's nod was a little shaky. "He saved my life," she rasped. "And he thought that made up for him taking Lincoln's."

Lucifer sat forward a little, running his hand gently up and down her arm.

"And didn't into account that the math of redemption isn't so..." He looked thoughtful. "Mercantile."

"Became something like him in the end, anyway," Octavia muttered. Shoved at her hair again, but it just flopped back down. "Did you know, when Duke -- found out..."

About everything.

About her.

"It was from Pike, too."

"He is like a bad penny, isn't he?" Lucifer asked, mouth quirking briefly.
